The higher trim version of a car is always meant to look nicer, but sometimes is doesn't workout that way.
Most of us agree that late model pick ups look better in the base trim.
and to me the 924, especially the early base models with no spoiler, looks better than the 924 Carrera GT (which was basically an earlier version of a 944 looks wise).
And last the current Chevy Sonic. I think the RS's front end with it's silly chrome bits, looks horrible.
Base model (LT)
LTZ I think it does look a lot better with fogs.

Most trucks look like they are more functional as trucks when they are in base trim. When they are above base trim they just start to look too fancy and less and less truck like.

Trucks have eclipsed the late 1950s for gaudy use of Chrome. The only thing left is to bring back the Dagmars that GM loved back then.
I'm with you 100% on the Sonic.
I prefer the 944 to the 924. The 924 looks too lean. Like the scrawny arms Rob Lowe that won't be having any Mayonnaise.

I despise black plastic bumper covers and trim. I think the big horn looks nice.

Even as an adamant Porsche guy, I was always put off by the 924. Love the 944, though. And minus the graphics package the PowerWagon makes that base look meh and beige.

I always thought the Magnum SE
Looks better all blacked out than the R/T with all its chrome.

The highest trim levels of all of the big three, aren't excessive with it.

to me the 924 is more honest. I like how simple and smooth it is. I'm in no way saying the 944 is ugly. I just loke the 924.

I think the 2012 R/T and lower trim Dodge Charger looks better than the SRT/8

The Ram has less chrome than the Ford lol. The Ram and Silverado also don't have the cheap as fuck looking chrome lettering on the side of the bed, that might as well be a badge that says 20".
With the exception of the rims, that's all factory.

Either way, it looks pretty gaudy. But the bed badge is what really does it in. I'd much rather have the King Ranch. I hated that tailgate when Chevy did it, and I still hate it now.
